A Semiempirical Model for the Description of Solvent Effects on Chemical Reactions

چکیده

— An attempt is made to provide a more rigorous basis for the description of solvent effects on chemical reactions by taking into account the various free energy contributions involved in the transfer of a substrate from the gas to the solution phase. It is shown that the solvent influence on various chemical and physical processes can be represented in a semiquantitative or even quantitative way by means of three parameters, namely the socalled acceptor number, which represents a measure of the electrophilic or acceptor properties of the solvent, the donor number, which represents a measure of the nucleophilic or donor properties of the solvent and the standard free energy of vaporization of the solvent which is related to the free energy required to create holes in the solvent in which the substrates can be accomodated. Protic solvents usually do not obey the relationships obtained for aprotic media and this appears to be due to the varying basicity of the substrates under consideration.

Smooth solvation method for d-orbital semiempirical calculations of biological reactions. 2. Application to transphosphorylation thio effects in solution.

Density-functional and semiempirical quantum methods and continuum dielectric and explicit solvation models are applied to study the role of solvation on the stabilization of native and thio-substituted transphosphorylation reactions. Extensive comparison is made between results obtained from the different methods. For the semiempirical methods, explicit solvation was treated using a hybrid qua...

Doping finite-length carbon and boron nitride nanotubes with aluminium atom: A thermodynamic semiempirical investigation

The doping reaction of truncated boron nitride and carbon nanotubes with aluminium atom wastheoretically investigated. The AM1, PM3, and PM6 semiempirical methods have been used toevaluate the thermochemistry of doping reactions of single walled boron nitride nanotubes andcarbon nanotubes. The enthalpy changes, Gibbs free energy changes, and entropy changes of studieddoping reactions were evalu...

Progress toward chemical accuracy in the computer simulation of condensed phase reactions.

We describe a procedure for the generation of chemically accurate computer-simulation models to study chemical reactions in the condensed phase. The process involves (i) the use of a coupled semiempirical quantum and classical molecular mechanics method to represent solutes and solvent, respectively; (ii) the optimization of semiempirical quantum mechanics (QM) parameters to produce a computati...

Prediction of Solvent Effect on Asphaltene Precipitation at Reservoir Conditions

The aim of the current study is to evaluate the effects of inhibitors or solvents on asphaltene precipitation under reservoir conditions. To this end, the interaction between live oil and solvent, and its side effects on precipitated/dissolved asphaltene were predicted via Miller’s entropy modified polymer solution theory under reservoir conditions. Then, the adjustable parameters of the model ...
